The South Island, from space
Relevant offers
America's Nasa space agency has released a brilliant picture of the South Island taken from a satellite.
It was taken by their Aqua satellite on December 7 and captured the island in its full glory.
Aqua, which was launched in 2002, is collecting data on the Earth's water cycles and is part of a series of observations designed to better understand how Earth operates.
It provides a range of resolutions in photos and information. In the resolution pictured two fires in the Southern Alps have been detected and marked on the image with red dots.
The large image has a resolution of 250 metres per pixel, the highest resolution image available.
