A shocked Christchurch tram driver had a narrow escape after a faulty door smashed into the tourist attraction shortly after 12pm today.
Conductor Owen Clough said the driver got a shock after the glass door, which opens automatically as the tram goes through the Cathedral Junction shopping area, shut suddenly on the tram as it passed through at low speed.
Fifteen tourists aboard the tram also got a fright, but were unhurt.
The door smashed into the driver's cab, but he did not need any medical treatment.
The tram was knocked sideways but stayed on the rails.
