Speed is being blamed for a horrific crash that tore a car in two after it collided with a power pole in suburban Invercargill this morning.
Emergency services were greeted with a horrific scene in John St near the intersection with Metzger St in south Invercargill shortly after 5am.
Sergeant Paul Cross well, of Invercargill police, said two male occupants of the Ford Falcon car were taken to Southland Hospital with serious injuries but no further details of the men were available this morning.

An Invercargill Fire Service spokesman said the car split along the firewall between the motor and the in terior.
The front of the car stopped on the pole while the rear section careened another 10m down the street.
The passenger in the car was more seriously injured with a leg torn off at the knee, fire fighters had to cut him from the vehicle.
