CLOAK OF CONTROVERSY: Kapiti local politician Dale Evans stunned councillors when he wore a Ku Klux Klan outfit to a council meeting in an effort to draw attention to water problem.

Relevant offers

A Kapiti politician took National Hoodie Day to the extreme by donning a Ku Klux Klan costume at a council meeting, in a move that stunned district councillors and the public.

Paraparaumu-Raumati Community Board deputy chairman Dale Evans walked into the Kapiti District Council's monthly meeting during public speaking time, dressed in the white outfit with a sign around his neck that said "its wotz under da hood dat counts" - mimicking the slogan used in a current national hoodie campaign.

He wore the costume as a publicity stunt to draw attention to problems with Kapiti bore water.

But after the meeting, deputy mayor Ann Chapman said it was appalling to use a serious episode of racism in American history as an analogy to the hoodie campaign.

"It was outrageous - a poorly chosen disguise and disrespectful to what some American black people went through in the deep south," Mrs Chapman said.

John Haxton, Paraparaumu-Raumati Community Board chairman, said Mr Evans should have brought the water issue up at a community board meeting, rather than resorting to dressing up.

Kapiti Mayor Jenny Rowan agreed. However, Mr Evans "was exercising his democratic right".

This was a truly disgusting stunt. I support Evans's argument against the bore water, being from Kapiti myself, but using an horrific racist image to express this is not only deplorable, it has nothing to do with bore water or the 'hoods' which Hoodie Day is referring to.

I sincerely doubt the bore water cause will be at all advanced through Evans's actions. All he has achieved is to show complete disrespect for those who suffered at the hands of the KKK, and make entirely inappropriate links between a murderous, racist cult and today's teenage generation. Quite frankly, it makes me sick.

Did he say once that he supported what the KKK did or its ideas? Good on him for trying to get change. I still cannot see why this sort of thing should be so offensive to us New Zealanders, this sort of thing has never happened in our country. People need to look past the KKK and its ideology as it was not what Dale's focus was.

I don't even get this whole issue with hoodies in the first place, but back to the KKK attire and black face ... does this man represent a whole segment of New Zealanders who don't realise you just can't make "jokes" like this? I mean, how can anyone support this 'demonstration'? I can't believe how shocked I am, as a visitor to this country.

I can't believe this gets worse and yet it does. On Close Up tonight ... in black face? Shocking, and this man still doesn't even begin to realise how wrong, how utterly wrong his actions / methods have been. So very sad.

Hi all, This is what most cosmopolitan people from around the world associate with NZ. That is why it will take another generation or two before NZ can become cosmopolitan within its society & ideology. As for the comments relating to the dude who says NZ did not harm American Blacks. The KKK is associated with all European colonisation & abuse of human rights within Australia, NZ, Americas to name a few. For a european to be to be frightened by a hoodie? To be honest I do have empathy, as colonised people would also be frightened of a man wearing the white collar, waving the bible and saying you love our god and hold our bible while we take your land. Peace & out.

LOL Lighten up everybody Firstly A+++ good on this councillor who is obviously TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE to his constituants instead of yes men like so many gravy train councillors. Im a darkie. Of course the KKK is bad and distastful. But the context of this? the hoodie, the suit, the day, the actual message he is putting across? get a grip on it. This to me is not a racist councillor, but actually a hard working one that calls a spade a spade in relation to whats right for his contituants. And we should have more of them. Possibly his fellow councillors who were against his bill were the ones that leaked this to he press, and actually they are really the racists??

so, to everybody who finds the costume funny or acceptable:

Do you also find the mob lynching of African-Americans funny? Do you enjoy cross burning? Because THAT IS WHAT THE KKK COSTUME REPRESENTS.

They are White Supremacists, and anti-semites to boot. I'm sure none of you encourage these things.

There may never be world peace, and one group may always hate another, #28, but that does not make it right. It's still totally unacceptable.

There are no laws against complete ignorance, insensitivity and idiocy. Just as well for Dale Evans.

Another blow for Kapiti's image. Perhaps the bore water has got to the brains of the Kapiti people who voted this unprofessional creature in office. He should resign immediately so that the Kapiti Coast Council can distance themselves from his racists presentation.

I personally am offended by what Dale Evans did. To me it was an offence to my husband and family who are of Maori decent as the KKK is for white race only.By doing this he has made a statement that anything goes, so perhaps next time we visit the local council we might see gang patches, ethnic dress, nudity even. What an idiot and why is he a member of council? What hope do we have for the furure of Kapiti with idiots like him in care of it.
