After months of debate, the All Blacks squad for the World Cup will be announced at 2pm tomorrow. Dominion Post rugby writer Toby Robson selects his 30-man squad based on form and the national selectors' rationale.

FULLBACKS (2 spots)

My selections: Mils Muliaina, Israel Dagg

Why: Dagg dispelled any doubts about his injury or his class in Port Elizabeth. Not only should he walk into the cup squad, but the Hawke's Bay man hits the line like Muliaina did in his early 20s. Should push for the No 15 jersey or even a start on the wing.

WINGS (3 spots)

My selections: Isaia Toeava, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Cory Jane

Why: Zac Guildford's done nothing wrong, but misses out because he is not versatile enough for the bench nor clearly the best starting option on either wing. Toeava gets in on form despite his detractors – he'd be my starting right wing. On the left I'd back Gear to produce in the big tests to come. He is world-class with space, but his urgency has not matched his rivals and if the past month is treated as a trial he misses out by a whisker. Sivivatu looked good in the early tests, but his Super Rugby apathy grates. Jane is simply a big-game player who will be handy during a kick heavy cup run. Coin tosses all over the show.

MIDFIELD (4 spots)

My selections: Ma'a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Sonny Bill Williams, Richard Kahui

Why: Nonu and Smith are way out ahead as the incumbents, but Williams' knockers should ease off. He wasn't dominant against the Boks, but he didn't have Dan Carter inside him. Kahui confirmed his place in Port Elizabeth with a strong performance and covers right wing.

FIVE-EIGHTHS (2 spots)

My selections: Dan Carter, Colin Slade

Why: Slade didn't play well against South Africa. His two crimes were not changing a game plan that wasn't working and trying too hard to emulate Carter's short kicking game. If the cup final were tomorrow and Carter injured, I'd rather have Weepu in the No 10 on that evidence. That said, Slade hadn't played a test of that magnitude and will have learnt a lot. Aaron Cruden fans have a point, but it's too late to change tack now.

HALFBACKS (3 spots)

My selections: Jimmy Cowan, Piri Weepu, Andy Ellis

Ad Feedback

Why: Weepu still offers more than Cowan, but it's splitting hairs and could be horses for courses.

LOOSE FORWARDS (5 spots)

My selections: Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, Jerome Kaino, Adam Thomson, Liam Messam

Why: Messam was brave, but undersized against South Africa at No 8 and that is an on-going concern. But with Thomson sewing up the utility spot it's questionable where Messam actually sits in this mix? In hindsight a specialist openside like Matt Todd may have been a better bet, while thought must also have been given to the bulkier Victor Vito as a backup at No 8. Too late now.

LOCKS (4 spots)

My selections: Brad Thorn, Sam Whitelock, Ali Williams, Anthony Boric

Why: Unlucky for Jarrad Hoeata, but Boric was outstanding on the end-of- year tour last year and was only missing due to injury. With Williams still slightly off his game another experienced test lock is needed.

PROPS (4 spots)

My selections: Tony Woodcock, John Afoa, Owen Franks, Ben Franks

Why: Wyatt Crockett makes way for Woodcock, a tough call, but one that's always been on the cards. The Franks brothers are a two-for-one deal and Afoa's versatility makes him a smarter call than Crockett.

HOOKERS (3 spots)

My selections: Keven Mealamu, Andrew Hore, Corey Flynn

Why: Mealamu continues to set the standard, but Hore looks better every week. Flynn is there because a third hooker is needed, though it's still questionable whether he offers more than Hika Elliott.

god help us if carter gets injured. Colin slades performance against the boks was pathetic and he single handedly lost the test for us. For goodness sakes he's not even under pressure of losing his world cup spot, he was always the back up ist five, So what the hell happened? everything he did was inaccurate and subsequently putting the blacks under too much pressure. his short kick offs were not high enough for the blacks to get there to compete, victor matfield was laughing as the ball went straight into his hands every time and his chip kicks over the top were pathetic as he continually gave away the ball to the boks, but here's the most upsetting thing about what happened, my main man sonny bill was made to look ordinary outside this rank amateur starving sonny of the ball so that he could not unleash his magic. so in conclusion "buck up your ideas slade the selectors have shown faith in you and it's time man up or see ya later world cup!!!!

Writing articles like this full of conjecture and personal bias-ness always gets readers riled up one way or another. But good luck to whoever gets in and also to those who misses out. Glad I'm not a selector.

The comments claiming Toeava is Henry's pet are pathetic. The coaches, Henry/Smith/Hansen have worked with every top player in New Zealand. They are not stupid men, quite the opposite. They are also not as many claim Auckland coaches.

Crusaderists seem to forget that Wayne Smith set up the Crusaders culture and led them to their first Super titles. They seem to forget that Hansen was deeply involved with coaching in Canterbury. Henry was born in Christchurch.

These guys rate Toeava, people should have some respect for that. I finally got around to watching the game (on youtube, the guy that posts these is awesome!) and it was an interesting experience after reading all the comments on here.

I was expecting SBW and Toeava to have nightmare games. I was surprised because Ice had a very good game, especially when you consider he had just come back from injury. SBW was solid. Haters need to get a job.

Jane with his twittering has once again opened his big mouth saying he was on his way to Brisbane....note it has been removed. On that alone he should not be selected, loose lips sink ships. Go Zaccy and Izzy.

what we have is an attempt to create negative opinion and distraction by the opposition to target individuals in the AB WC squad. Nothing does your confidence in than to read all this crap - I hope GH has the ability to lift his players above it. This is not the 1st time the ABs have been affected by their own press.

Its really tough on Crockett that he's gettng dropped, he's a world class prop thatl'd be a solid starting player anywhere else in the world but the guys ahead of him are just too good, it'll be interesting to see how Woodcock comes back into the fold. Ali Williams needs to shake them jitters and start playing rugby!!! The most fragile international forward i've seen in ages at the moment, i'm a fan of his and it stings but I go for the Sam/Brad combo all the way. Maybe if there was a 2012 RWC then sweet he'd be the solid player we all know he can be consistently but expecting him to come back the same player he was was too much. Outties bro! lol, have Boric (If he hasn't lost it all like Ali) and Hoeata as backups, both freakin amazing players. I hope Weepu squeezes past Cowan as starting 9 but I can see Graham Henry maybe fow a few games have him 10/9 cover and maybe an extra forward in the bench, or maybe Guildford. See, there is room for him! It sucks for him Guildfords an amazing player thats gonna miss out cause theres no room, but i'd have him in there. Dagg>Mils
