The Consumers Price Index rose 0.6 percent in the June quarter, taking the annual inflation rate to 1.9 percent, Statistics New Zealand said.
Economists expected a 0.5 percent rise in the quarter to an annual rate of 1.8 percent, according to a survey by Reuters.
The rate has fallen from an 18-year high of 5.1 percent as recently as the September 2008 quarter.
