Mind-boggling Bingle bungle

Last updated 12:55 12/03/2010

Of all the worthy news stories splayed across the various media forms this week, it was the least worthy one that has had me the most exasperated.

I mean really, a woman whose largely unclad image is already smeared over the interweb courtesy of her willingly raunchy photo spreads, has the impertinence to sue over a barely revealing photo? Moral high ground forfeited?

Surely Lara Bingle knows that a leaked photo of this nature is a career enhancer for a woman of her talents? It's not like it's video footage of her doing anything sexually untoward. Even if it had been, it did wonders for the careers of the likes of Kim Kardashian, and Paris Hilton. It seems as if tapes of this nature are virtually de rigeur for any aspiring lady talent these days.

What's truly sickening to me is that I know all of this. Good lord, what has become of me?

That this event and its repercussions have spiralled into a cultural and sporting media orgy shouldn't astound me, but it does.

And before you comment and say "But you're writing about it too and you are in the media so you are a part of the feeding frenzy", yes. You are right. Damn it.

As much as I didn't really wish to comment, there finally came a point where I thought, "What the bloody hell is going on?" The only confusing thing is quite what that point was.

It's all a little like suffering a bad hangover. You aren't entirely sure when the nausea sets in, but you do know that you wish to purge yourself of the resulting toxicity quick smart.

Was it the point where the million-dollar request for media coverage, that incorporated interviews and a reality TV show was mooted by a representative of the young woman? I'm not sure.

Was it at the point when it was revealed that Bingle and her beau were living in a $6 million dollar apartment? Possibly.

The most likely point was when I learnt that her engagement ring cost $200,000.

Was it jealousy or honest righteous indignation at the thought of this that caused in my breast an attack of consternated apoplexy. $200,000 simply seems vulgar, but then the whole incident and media maelstrom reeks of vulgarity so I shouldn't be too surprised.

Initially I had thought Lara Bingle simply a little mad.

Now I suspect she is the sanest one in the whole sordid morass of media madness.

Where the bloody hell am I? Burying my head in my hands and tasting the salty tears of my own frustration at the importance the media attributes to this story.

Am I alone?

Why has this ridiculous story been headline news for the last week? Do even the Ozzies give a damn?

Evidently, Lara Bingle's new publicity rep has absolutely no scruples whatsoever. And the journalists *cough* are happy to play along.

Australia is little America.

This story, the bosomy ditz that perpetrated it with her giant hissy fit, and the subsequent coverage, has absolutely disgusted me. Attention seeking WAG's are not something I thought i'd suffer hearing about in NZ. A greedy, empty headed chick like this puts the cause of sexual equality back 30 years. Reporting on their exploits only encourages them, so stop it. Thank god for the Huffington Post, the BBC and other sane news websites.

I think it's an interesting look at copywright and ownership of images. she chose to do the raunchy photo spreads and was paid. her partner took a photo of her, said he'd deleted it, and once they'd broken up, passed it around his friends, and subsequently years later was published in a magazine. i think it's fine to sue when some one is using your image without your consent. it's standard practice. The ridiculous part comes in because she is beautiful and because her partner is another sports player currently on tournament, hence the media over kill. so dumb.

Yes.

Yes I agree, this should NOT be on our news.

But I think your missing the point.

The big difference is, her other photos were her paid modelling work, she was in control.

To have an ex boy friend, release personal photos of her, must of been devasting and demanding, in fact her skin must of been crawling.

It's an huge invasion of privacy and it's sick.

Im suprise that any person would question this.

Unfortunately you are not the only one caught in this madness T.R. Miss Bingle is surely being manipulated by the money grubbing PR types. If she had a couple of brain cells to rub together behind that dazzling facade she might be capable of extracting herself from this mess. Beauty times dumb equals media frenzy.

It's been mathematically proven.

I had never even heard of Lara Bingle until this week. It does seem very hypocritical of her to make a living out of baring her body and then turn around and sue because a picture is being circulated of her baring her body. But agree that the dude who circulated it is a douchebag. But like you Te Radar - why am I even talking about it ..... Great way for her to raise her profile ....... She should actually be thanking the douchebag.

You are not alone - sometimes I wonder if what is important to the media is actually the same as what is important to real people. I think not.

I've thus far avoided knowing anything about this, except the name of the lady, some nudity happened, the price of her engagement ring, and that there was some chap named Michael involved, who is either NZ or Aussie.

I do despair of TV news these days - a couple of nights ago I was watching and this was the number 2 item. What's happened that, even on a slow news day, this women's mag muck gets pushed up to the top of a 6 o'clock bulletin? It's either a sad indictment on the state of current affairs journalism, or a sad indictment on what grabs the viewing public (who watch the ads). I suspect a little of both.
