Helicopter crashes near Queenstown
The pilot of a helicopter that crashed during landing has been airlifted to Lakes District Hospital.
The crash happened just after 3pm this afternoon when the helicopter was landing and clipped another grounded helicopter.
The six passengers inside the airborne helicopter were also airlifted to Queenstown Airport about 5.15pm, but their injuries did not require hospitalisation, she said.
The grounded helicopter also had passengers inside it and their condition is unknown, Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand spokeswoman Sarah Brazil said.
Four helicopters responded to the accident, and one remains at the scene with the people who were in the grounded helicopter.
She said the extent of the pilot's injuries or the circumstances of the crash were not clear as the situation was developing.
The Civil Aviation Authority has been notified and search and rescue coordinators are liaising with the Wellington centre, which runs search and rescues when beacons are activated.
