A 19-year-old will appear at Tauranga District Court tomorrow charged with murder after a man was found shot to death following a party in the small seaside settlement of Maketu.
Police said the body of Isaac Dale Bushell, 46, was found by two people about 1.45am after they heard there had been an incident in Beach Rd park in the town just south of Tauranga.
Police were this morning questioning a man they picked up after stopping a vehicle near the scene and this afternoon confirmed they had laid charges.
They have also recovered a firearm from a local address.
They said Bushell and the suspect knew each other and were both at the party earlier in the evening.
Police were today carrying out forensic examinations and other inquiries in the area. A post mortem will be carried out tomorrow.
Police were continuing their scene examinations and were keen to hear from anyone with information about the death, particularly people who heard gunshots or were able to assist with the exact time the incident occurred.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Tauranga Police on 07 577 4300. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
