A Dannevirke man has been flown to hospital with serious head injuries after an accident at a meatworks plant.

The man, in his 60s, had been operating a stock loading race - a ramp to get stock off trucks - when it fell on him, said Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter pilot Chris Moody.

Moody said the man had "life-threatening injuries" was taken by ambulance to the local aerodrome before being stabilised by St John Ambulance paramedics, and then flown to Palmerston North Hospital.

The incident happened at Alliance Group Ltd's Dannevirke meatworks plant about 3pm today.

A spokeswoman for the Alliance Group said the company had launched its own internal investigation, and will co-operate fully with the WorkSafe New Zealand investigation.

She said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the accident and the company's immediate priority would be supporting the employee's family and staff at the plant.
