Honour your favourite drummer day
As anyone who's played Guitar Hero: World Tour knows, drumming is hard. Like, real hard. Too hard for me - I'm still stuck on easy level. My left arm is so uncoordinated I don't know how it's still attached to my body. It's a wonder it hasn't wandered off by itself and started a commune somewhere, with little mini slave hands feeding it grapes.
As an aside, what did you do yesterday for Random Act of Kindness Day? I rescued a scared cat out of a tree. Yeah, yeah, I know. That's just the kind of guy I am. 'Betsy' was only just over head height, but she was meowing a lot. And I really only got her down because that constant wail was annoying me. But still, it counts. Right?
Anyway, now that that very special day is over - and in a bid to bring two seemingly unrelated opening paragraphs together - I've decided that today is Honour an Under-Appreciated Drummer Day. It's not really. I just made that up. But if we take it seriously enough it might one day become real. Hey, a boy can dream.
I've decided this because, thanks to a few stints in the hot seat on World Tour, I've found myself admiring drummers a little more at concerts. I used to stare open-jawed at the lead guitarist. Or the singer. I always ignore the bassist, and that won't change unless D'Arcy Wretzky rejoins the Smashing Pumpkins.
But that Welsh dude who was playing with Nine Inch Nails earlier this year? Awesome. Tool's Danny Carey at Lollapalooza? Incredible. Check out this flying Travis Barker solo from a recent Blink 182 show. And how about Seseme Street's Animal going nuts? He's not bad too.
But my choice for today's under-appreciated drummer dude isn't any of that lot. I've chosen Pat Wilson, the man hitting the skins for possible Big Day Out headliners Weezer. Here's another aside: The Herald Sun recently reported Muse are going to be headlining. Who will it be? I can't stand all this tension. My hair is starting to fall out.
Back to Wilson. It's not so much his drumming skills that I admire. It's his hilarious, goofy and consistently amusing appearances in Weezer's awesome collection of music videos. Dude is a crack-up.
Here he is standing up trying to play the drums in Dope Nose. See him playing hacky sack in Say It Ain't So. Check out his chicken dance in El Scorcho. And I love how he shakes his hips and runs off the wall in the dog-filled, one-take Spike Jonze treatment for Undone - The Sweater Song. By the way, nice bowl cut Rivers.
To be honest, Wilson reminds me a little of The Office's Dwight Schrute. And we all know how awesome he is. Perhaps they're kindred spirits and Wilson hides weapons in all his different drum components, just in case of a bear attack. Maybe, just maybe, I'm right.

N.Kissell from the Chch metal band Human is insane!! Looking forward to playing with them at Al's bar on the 29th of October bring it on!!!
Simon Sweetman from Sofa - His congo drum solo on Slumber was just awesome.
Dave Grohl. Awesome.
I'm going to dig into the past and say Carl Palmer from ELP. Yes, I know there have been tons of good ones recently but anyone who could drum out the complexities of some of those long ELP tracks and anchor down Keith Emerson's keyboard work deserves a medal.
Geoff Bunn would have to be up there as favorite drummer of all time, followed closely by Don Henley from the Eagles and Phil Collins!
Tim Alexander from Primus
Danny Carey from TOOL for sure. The guy is a drumming god!
Gene Hoglan - By far the grooviest and technical drummer ever, never over plays, just lay's the beat down heavy and hard!!
Although I'm not a big fan, but doesn't the drummer for def leppard only have one arm?
Great plug Mo, where can i buy cds?

Neal Peart - Rush, very inventive beats, has influenced many drummers. Also Carter Beauford - Dave Matthews band - awesome. Beauford drums open-hand right, meaning he uses his left hand on the hi hat and right hand on snare, veru tricky for most drummers
