Big Day Out's greatest hits

Last updated 11:04 29/09/2009

bdoSo, no Eminem. No David Bowie. No Massive Attack. No Weezer (**sniff**). And no Blink 182 or Limp Bizkit - but that's surely a good thing. Heck, there sure were a lot of mad rumours flying around in the build-up to today's first Big Day Out 2010 line-up announcement.

Instead of opting for one massive headline act - as the festival did for Metallica in 2004 - or choosing a nostalgia trip, like Neil Young last year, Big Day Out organisers have instead opted for a tried-and-true line-up of regulars and festival friendly acts in 2010.

Yep, this year's initial line-up announcement - there are two more to come, remember - reads like a Big Day Out Greatest Hits package. Muse have played three times before, Peaches twice and Kasabian, Dizzee Rascal, The Mars Volta, Rise Against and Lily Allen have all played at least once each. I think. I've been to so many Big Day Outs now my memory is getting a little hazy.

But for my money this is a very good line-up. Personally, I'm looking forward mostly to metal breakthrough act Mastodon, British drone-rockers The Horrors and mash-up king Girl Talk.

Plus, I've never seen Muse, The Mars Volta are always awesome live, Dizzee Rascal's last show in the Boiler Room was spectacularly sweaty and a little bonkers, and Kasabian's set in 2007 is up among my favourite Big Day Out moments ever. Not quite top five, but pretty close.

I'm not fussed on Lily Allen - didn't she just quit the music industry? - and most of the Aussie acts announced leave me a little cold.

But there's more than enough there to keep me happy. All that, plus Faith No More have announced a New Zealand tour. I'm a happy man.

What do you think of the line-up? And who would you like to see in the second and third announcements?

Muse. Again. Yawn. And they are just so whiney these days!

I won't be attending, but I can see my dear hubby begging me to clear some funds so he can go see Mastadon...

Mastodon are the only act I might consider going to see... I've seen Muse, Kasabian and the Mars Volta multiple times, so although they're decent, they don't justify the ticket price alone.

But when you look at the list of concerts over the next few months, the BDO line-up is actually pretty sad... Megadeth/Slayer, Pearl Jam, Dream Theater, Them Crooked Vultures, Faith No More...

It's a good lineup. If I lived in Auckland I would go for sure. But given I'd have to pay for flights as well as tickets, there's no one in amongst that lineup that I like enough to justify the expense. The last BDO I went to had Bjork and Rage Against the Machine, so I had to go.

There are 2 more lineup announcements, but (as I recall) those ones tend to be less exciting. If the likes of Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Portishead, Massive Attack, or St Vincent turned up in the next two announcements I would probably reconsider

Interestingly I can't say I'm hugely surprised with Massive Attack not being in BDO lineup, I had heard over the last couple of months that Massive Attack would be coming to NZ, but the rumour I had heard had them here in March, for their own tour, not for a festival. When I saw the article on here that had them as a rumoured band for BDO I did kinda wonder if whoever wrote that article had heard the rumour of Massive Attack touring, and just associated it with BDO. So I'm still hopeful that they may make their way here.

Don't forget that it is A BIG DAY OUT, so whilst the music is paramount it's not the be all and end all of the festival occasion. There will always be plenty to see and the often the odd musical gem pops up when you least expect it.

The Decemberists are the big attraction for me everything else is just filler.

I would have LOVED to have seen Placebo going (as they just released a new album recently....) Muse are good, but seen them 2ce already, Rise against are always good fun... but its so expensive to travel up to Aucks. Hope the next lineup's are better.

Agreed with Regan 6, The Decemberists is going to be amazing!

I would love to go - and if I still lived in Auckland, there would have been no hestitation but factoring in flights as well it's end up costing upwards of $400 for one day! Has anyone suggested to Air New Zealand (that company that has a monopoly on regional flights) to set up a ticket+flights deal?
