Six reasons why Grunge is back

Last updated 15:03 27/10/2009

n1. The new Alice in Chains and Dinosaur Jr albums rule: Call me a bogan if you like, but over the past few months the albums I've played the most are Alice in Chains' Black Gives Way to Blue and Dinosaur Jr's Farm. Also Dirty Projectors, but they're not really grunge so I can't find a link there.

2. Pearl Jam are touring: For the first time in, like, nine years, Pearl Jam are coming to New Zealand, playing Mt Smart Stadium on November 27. My first ever concert was Pearl Jam's show at the Mt Smart Supertop in 1996, when Tim Finn came on stage to sing Split Enz songs. So I can't wait.

3. Temple of the Dog: Chris Cornell joins Pearl Jam on stage for this recent rendition of Grunge classic Hunger Strike. I reckon a Soundgarden reunion might only be a few months away. Let's face it, his solo career isn't going anywhere...

4. Nirvana's Bleach is being reissued: On November 2, the 20th anniversary edition of Bleach is being reissued, with a remastered edition complete with a bonus live album and a 48-page booklet. I want vinyl.

5. New grunge bands rule: Checked out Silversun Pickups yet? Downloaded Dinosaur Pile-Up's EP? Checked out Iran? What are you waiting for?

6. Deja Voodoo's new album is called...: ...The Shape of Grunge to Come. Enough said.

I really dig the Silversun Pickups album. It kinda sounds like they ate the Smashing Pumpkins and are now regurgitating them almost intact, but to be honest, the Smashing Pumpkins seemingly aren't interested in being the Smashing Pumpkins properly anymore, so there is a vacancy in the area, and the Silversun Pickups fill it nicely.

Have given Dirty Projectors a couple of goes now, but they're just not doing it for me. Have you listened to St Vincent? They're/she's great.

Jeez has it been 20 years already? You know these trends go in 20 year cycles... next the kids will be wearing flannel...

Thank God! Does this mean emo will finally die?

dude, Pearl Jam last toured feb 1998 (making it 11 years, not 9) - and their first concert was march 1995, not 1996. 1996 was, of course, the proper Smashing Pumpkins last New Zealand show (not counting the faux pumpkins a couple of years back).

I don't mind grunge like PJ, STP, Dinosaur Jnr but funnily enough I never rated Nirvana. I found a lot of it to be maniacal screaming. The only Nirvana I like is Unplugged. It would be cool if grunge did come back but new bands (not EMO) emerging rather than Scott Weiland staggering about on stage with STP in an opium infused delirium...actually that would also be cool.
