The big, big, big interview
I've interviewed Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails and Monica from Survivor. Our brief discussions almost always go fine, apart from the time will.i.am serenaded me for several minutes. That was weird.
I get a little nervous before the bigger interviews. That's only natural. What if I say something stupid? Do something bad? Muck it up somehow?
Or what if I fart right in middle of it all? I might end up on YouTube.
But my nerves are even more frayed than usual at the moment, because on Saturday, about four hours before Them Crooked Vultures take to the stage in Auckland, I'll be having a brief chat to John Paul Jones.
Yep, the John Paul Jones. The dude from Led Zeppelin. You know, only the greatest rock band in history. Dave Grohl might be listening in. Josh Homme will probably be milling around somewhere. Arrgh. Where do I buy some of those man nappies?
Ten minutes isn't long. But what do I ask? Do I go in for the kill, and get all 60 Minutes on him? Or do I keep it brief, a general exchange of pleasantries?
What do you reckon? Got any questions you'd like me to ask Mr Jones?

I've never been a Led Zeppelin fan so I would be more excited by an interview with Dave Grohl, whom I love dearly for his musicianship. (in our house it's all about the drummer) I'm just looking forward to the Friday gig in Welly...
Go and do a Google search of interviews with him, and ask him something he hasnt been asked before.
Make sure the question is about THE MUSIC, and not some BS deep personal type question.
I guess he is sick of being asked about Zeppelin. But ask him how the hell him and John Bonham came up with those incredible/crazy time signatures on "Fool In The Rain", and "Nobody's Fault But Mine". Also ask about some of the great string arrangements he has done e.g. "Shes A Rainbow" by Rolling Stones, or "Everybody Hurts" by REM. Especially "Everybody Hurts".....the strings lift the song to a new level midway through the song!
I'm more excited about seeing these guys than AC/DC the night before!
I wanna know why they chose to do shows in NZ and the cities they've chosen to tour around the world so far, which are pretty random. They say they didn't want to promote TCV the usual way through heavy advertising etc but they're not playing every major city in the US, they're also doing shows in cities not normally on big band circuits eg Cologne, Germany, Portsmouth, UK I wanna know why the smaller obscure places. Am so frickin grateful they're playing in Wellington.
Ask him if he'd produce another Datsuns album I mean whatever happened to those guys after that??
You raise an interesting point Chris, and one that I've wondered about before. Why do they only give you 10 minutes? It just seems so short. Its ridiculous! And why is it always 10? Why does no band go "you know what, lets do 20 minutes" or 15 mins, or 30 mins?! It drives me nuts!
Plus, its not long enough to get what you're after sometimes - particularly if the artist dominates the IV: I did an interviewer with the bass player from a mega-popular, BDO-headliner-size band, who let me ask 1 question, then talked non-stop for nearly the whole 10 minutes in a monotone. You listen back to my recording and its terrible - I literally asked about 3 questions in 10 minutes!
That's like the interview of a lifetime - I would be nervous as hell too! Ask him if he's free to give me some bass guitar lessons!
@ Chris Philpott - I almost never have 10 minute interviews - and the couple of times I have the artist has happily chatted for close to 20 mins at any rate...standard time these days seems to be 20 mins usually; which is heaps. Often more than enough. Or sometimes 15 minutes - also a good ammount.
@ Simon Sweetman: I'll have to get you to give me some tips on this - I'm never sure if I should let it drag on, or if the record label rep is going to jump on the line, or if the phone will just go dead (I've only ever done phoners). That said, I had a 10 minute with Tim McIlrath from Rise Against, which ended up being nearly 40 minutes once! We talked about just about everything (turns out he's never played his own song on Guitar Hero).
Just got back from the TCV concert in Brisbane and gotta tell you all, these guys delivered the goods with bells on, it was fantastic! You're in for a treat Wellington and Auckland. Question for Mr Jones: is it legal to have this much fun?
