How are your ears coping with all this rock?

Last updated 13:44 17/02/2010

rockAre you going deaf? Because if you are, I wouldn't blame you. There are so many concerts happening at the moment there's almost one a night - and most of them are loud ones.

Just this week in Auckland there's Isis (Did anyone go? What was it like?), Clutch, Faith No More and Wu-Tang Clan beatmaker RZA.

And coming up in the next few weeks we've got The Prodigy, The Cribs, Pavement, The Dirty Projectors, Paramore, Deerhoof, The Pixies and The Dead Weather.

If you're attending any or all of these, then it's fair to say your ears are going to take a fair hammering.

My question to you is, are you using earplugs? And if so, what kind do you use? Do you think you've lost any of your hearing from concerts? Do you care if you're doing long-term damage?

I mention this because a couple of weeks ago when AC/DC performed, I almost needed ear plugs at my Western Springs home two blocks from the venue. It was loud enough to shake my tomatoes from their vines.

Our neighbours had four friends who didn't have tickets, but drove up from Invercargill just so they could sit out the back, have a few Jim Beams, listen to the show and occasionally jump up and do some really scissor kicks.

Watching them getting sloshed and busting out their best kung fu skills was our evening's entertainment.

Anyway, we had comments from some AC/DC fans saying they couldn't hear a peep for two days afterwards. That's surely not a good sign.

I used to suffer from tinnitus for weeks after concerts until I invested in some proper ear plugs - these ones here - and I haven't had a problem since.

So, one final question, how are your ears coping with all this rock?

Wheres the review for the Faith No More gig in Westpac Arena Christchurch last night? Or do we have to wait for the Auckland gig to find out what theirs was like?

I think you'll find AC/DC fan's beverage of choice is Woodstock. Or that's what I would surmise when I brought in our recycling bin the next day.

At least they recycle though!

My ears were ringing four days after Them Crooked Vultures! It was well worth it though!

As a general rule I wear earplugs at indoor gigs but don't need them at most outdoor ones. Wearing them indoors tends to attract 'harden up' comments from idiots, but I like being able to hear the next day.

I always wear earplugs ever since I nearly deafened myself at Muse. The good $30+ ones don't detract from the enjoyment at all and make everything more bearable.

15 meters from speakers at Wellies AC/DC = some beautiful pain.

Too true mate, all of these shows are going to leave me a damaged man...for a number of reasons ;)

I went to AC/DC and couldn't hear for a little over two days, and to this day I hear the odd 'pop' in my ears but they way I see it ... it was worth the permanent ear damage if there is any. Screw ear plugs, whats the point of going to a concert if you don't wanna hear it of all its glory???

Went to a concert recently and ears got hammered (god knows how I would've coped if I went to more than one in quick succession as many did in Welly a couple of weeks back!) so would seriously consider wearing plugs at the next one. Thanks for the link.
