The family of a slain West Auckland shopkeeper have thanked the public for their support and said they had no idea how many lives he touched.

Arun Kumar, 57, was stabbed in the neck on Tuesday morning while working behind the counter at Railside Dairy in Henderson - the West Auckland business he owned with his wife for the last five years.

His wife, who was working with him at the time, raised the alarm but Kumar died shortly after paramedics arrived.

In a statement released through police today, his family said their lives had "come to a standstill" since the incident.

"Arun was a perfect husband, a perfect dad and a perfect son," they said.

"It was less of a job and more of a hobby because he loved talking to people so much. Even when we told him to take a day off from the shop, he would find an excuse to go."

Yesterday a 13-year-old appeared in the Waitakere Youth Court charged with murder and assault with intent to rob.

A 12-year-old was charged assault with intent to rob.

Both were refused bail and remanded to youth justice facilities outside Auckland until later this month.

Kumar's family did not comment on the alleged offenders, choosing to focus on the memory of their loved one.

"He was always chatting to the customers and laughing with them," the family said.

"He was a very giving man and there are many examples that people are telling us, about how generous and kind he was.

"There are so many people's lives that he had touched that we didn't know about and are only finding out about now and that is giving us a lot of comfort."

A public viewing, where people can pay their respects, will be held tomorrow night at the Heaven Falls Funeral Home in Henderson from 6pm.

Kumar's funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon in Wiri.
