Auckland has returned to a calmer winter’s matariki night after an afternoon of lightning and rain.

At one point late this afternoon around 2500 homes around Auckland were without power, as the second of two deluges of rain and lightning lashed the city.

Roofing iron was blown off roofs onto power lines, cutting power when the wild weather hit about 4.50pm.

MetService had forecast a brief but severe downpour that would blow east across the city tonight.

By 9pm power supplier Vector said an outage in Mangere had been partially restored, although 311 customers were still without power.

Outages in Albany and Woodlands Park had been fully restored.

An outage in Kelston has been partially restored with just 138 customers off.

The Onehunga outage has crews on site working on the fault.

Auckland was settling back to rain and cold, but nothing out of the usual for winter.

Earlier the weather had prompted an online rush.
