Police are seeking four youths who used "extreme violence" in an aggravated robbery that left an east Auckland liquor store employee in hospital.

The offenders, believed to be in their mid to late teens, attempted to rob the Ti Rakau Liquor in Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga, on Saturday last week.

An employee working on his own tried to stop one of the men stealing a bottle of alcohol about 8.30pm when he was attacked.

"He didn't have ID ... he left and was talking to his group of four friends outside for about 10 minutes," the employee said.

"I was just standing there asking them for their ID, then one guy just attacked me.

"Then the rest joined in and were punching me in the face.

"One of them broke one or two bottles over my head and I lost consciousness for a few minutes," he said.

"When I went to ring the cops I couldn't even remember the number ... I had to google it."

Police had responded to the incident "very quickly," he said.

"I was dizzy for the whole night after the incident."

He was taken to hospital overnight for his injuries.

The man took four days off work staying at home with his family.

"My wife was really worried and asked me to stop ... she was really scared.

"They could have killed me with the bottle," he said.

The liquor store worker was by himself at the time.

A fellow worker finished a few hours earlier, but had usually stayed until closing.

The assailants left the store with several bottles of spirits.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur said the attack was worrying.

"It is very concerning that these offenders have used such extreme violence against this defenceless victim," he said.

Police want help identifying the offenders in the CCTV footage.
