Auckland commuters face added traffic woes with roadworks at St Lukes interchange next week.
Detours on the Northwestern Motorway will be in place from Sunday through to next Thursday, as part of upgrades for the $2bn Western Ring Route.
Works will be taking place overnight between 9pm and 5am.
NZ Transport Agency said motorists should avoid the area during those times and seek alternative routes.
The right turning lane from St Lukes Road to the westbound on-ramp of the motorway will be realigned, while a 2km-long section of the Northwestern Motorway is being widened from three to four lanes in each direction.
The works coincide with the resumption of school term three.
It is the last of six projects to connect the Northwestern and Southwestern (SH20) motorways.
The Western Ring Route is the most expensive project ever to be undertaken by the NZTA and is expected to be completed by mid-2021.
