A driver had to give up his attempt to flee police when he drove onto a beach in Auckland this afternoon.
The Northland man, aged in his 20s, and a fellow passenger, are both in custody over the high-speed chase that started in Karangahape Rd just before 2pm.
The pair were driving in an allegedly stolen Mercedes car when they fled from police at the corner of Karangahape Rd and Queen St.
They then sped off at speeds close to 100kmh through 50kmh zones before they came to a halt on a beach in Garnet Rd, Westmere, Senior Sergeant Matt Knowsley said.
A brief car chase had lasted the length of Karangahape Rd, but was called off before a police helicopter helped track down the vehicle.
Knowsley said the men "drove onto the beach and couldn't go any further".
They were both arrested at the scene and were assisting with inquiries, he said.
"We're still trying to work out why they drove off from police," Knowsley said.
No-one was hurt in the chase.
