As many as 30 people could have been involved across the two groups. Other people involved sustained minor injuries, Cramer said.

Morris sustained serious head injuries that were inflicted with a weapon.

Cramer said there was nothing to suggest the incident was related to gangs or drugs. The groups were not known to each other.

Cramer would not comment on Morris's recent police history or involvement with gangs. He also refused to comment on whether Millie Elder-Holmes was present during the incident, saying that he was not prepared to talk about any particular individuals.

Police had not yet made any arrests.

A forensic scene examination took place earlier, with Don Buck Rd cordoned off and guarded by a policewoman armed with an M4 assault rifle. A police officer at the scene said the gun was for staff safety.

Cramer said police were continuing the investigation, called Operation Venice, which was in its "very very early stages".

It was unclear exactly what had happened and how many people were involved.

"It's a confused situation."

Police had a lot of people to talk to in order to get a clear picture of exactly what happened, he said.

At this stage it appeared the group Morris was with was walking to the service station to get refreshments and a fight broke out between that group and another gathering of people having a party on Don Buck Rd.

Police said Morris's death was the result of a "random incident" and that he was not specifically targeted.

When police arrived there were about five people still on the street.

Friends and family of Morris and Elder-Holmes took to social media to comment on the tragedy.

Alex Watkins also took to Facebook to post a message of remembrance.

"RIP Connor Morris. Will always remember the great times we had at Kindy/Primary.. Some of the best memories of my life. Such a waste of a brilliant life and no one can and will ever replace you. All the love sent to the Morris Family from me and the olds on this tragic day.. Rest easy brother."

Former New Zealand model, television host, actress and entrepreneur Sara Tetro offered her sympathies on Twitter.

The pair recently travelled overseas together through Europe and Asia to countries including France, England, Greece, Spain and Thailand.

Morris's death marked the fifth violent incident in West Auckland in the last couple of months.

A mother and daughter were stabbed to death in their Ranui home at the end of May.

Days later 23-year-old Josh Roach was shot and killed in a shared driveway in Ranui.

In June dairy-owner Arun Kumar was stabbed to death. A 13-year-old was arrested and charged with his murder.

Cramer said the latest death was an "isolated incident" involving two groups if people who had an altercation.

Increased police patrols in the area were "making a difference", he said.

"There's no way that we can be everywhere all of the time."

According to Morris's Facebook page, he had been dating Paul Holmes's daughter for six years in June.

Elder and Morris have spoken over the years about their battles with drug dependency but told Metro magazine that they made a pact to get off drugs together in 2009. She also told the magazine that she wanted to marry and have a family with Morris.
