An Auckland man has been charged over the crash that killed a young Air New Zealand employee in February.

Xingyu Shang, 25, of the suburb of Dannemora in East Auckland, appeared in the Manukau District Court today charged with causing the death of Luke MacKenzie by carelessly driving while under the influence of a drug or alcohol.

He was also charged with failing to stay at the scene of an accident.

MacKenzie, 23, was killed in a head-on crash in Chapel Rd, Flat Bush, at 4.15am on February 24.

The marketing student was driving to work at Air New Zealand Parking, where he was covering for a friend as a favour.

Both cars involved were extensively damaged, with one ending up on its roof.

Police located Shang later that morning and took him to hospital to assess the injuries from the collision.

Shang will reappear in court in September.
