Michelle Tubby had a skull sitting in her Manly home freezer for three weeks.

This one was made of eight layers of red velvet cake, "cemented" together with chocolate buttercream and covered in chocolate ganache and fondant.

It was kept in the freezer as she worked on it.

The unusual cake was a gift for Kiwi rock metal band Devilskin while they were in Auckland filming a live show for DVD last weekend.

Michelle hand carved the cake to resemble Johnny, the skull which appears on their cover album, and after three weeks of hard work it was demolished pretty quickly.

"They were in love with it," she said. "It's the first time I've made something like this and it all worked out. It was a bit weird, but it was good fun."

While taking a few pre-show photographs with the skull, Michelle managed to break the skull's fondant teeth.

"I rushed home and had to perform some emergency dentistry work," she said. "I was a little late to the show."

Not only was she late, Michelle was lucky to make it there as she ended up in hospital shortly afterwards due to her endometriosis, where tissue which normally grows inside the uterus grows outside it.

"I narrowly escaped having two blood transfusions. I'm literally ‘dying for my art'," she said.

Michelle wants to gain more of a reputation for her Victorian gothic baking and says her intention is to go global.

"There aren't too many people wanting skull cakes in the Hibiscus Coast," she said. "I'm getting out and doing as many crazy things as I can."
