Police said a 25-year-old man received severe facial injuries including a fractured eye socket following the attack about 2.05am.
The victim, who had been drinking, was pulled to the ground by the attacker outside the ACG city campus on Queen St, near the intersection of Mayoral Dr.
The attacker repeatedly stomped on the man's head before being chased up Queen St by a member of the public.
Police said they wanted to locate the person who chased the attacker who was wearing a two-tone hooded sweatshirt.
