Charity box thief pleads guilty
A woman who stole a Kidney Kid NZ charity box from an Orewa store has pleaded guilty in the North Shore District Court today.
Angela Zwart, 36, took the takings of the charity box, amounting to $25, from the Dollar King store in Orewa on August 22.
The theft was caught on the store's security cameras and staff gave the images to police.
A member of the Orewa community later identified Zwart and called the police who formally charged her with one count of theft yesterday.
In court this afternoon Zwart plead guilty to the charge and her duty solicitor told Judge Pippa Sinclair that Zwart was remorseful for her actions and wanted to participate in a restorative justice process with her victims - the store's owners Myunghae Chung and Young Sun Kim.
Judge Sinclair agreed this was appropriate and convicted her, remanding her on bail until the restorative justice session on October 15.
Zwart was ordered not to go within one metre of the Dollar King store.
Kidney Kids chief executive Keith Mackenzie earlier told Fairfax Media he was pleased someone has been caught and hopes the money will now be paid back.
"It belongs to the children who it was generously donated to help."
