Auckland and Northland could experience severe thunderstorms bringing heavy rain from this afternoon.

MetService said isolated thunderstorms were expected over Northland and Auckland this afternoon and early evening.

Some of the thunderstorms could be severe, producing rainfall rates of 25 to 35mm per hour.

Rain of this intensity could cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and cold also lead to slips and hazardous driving conditions, MetService said.
