Huge numbers packed the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays on Sunday, with about 72,000 people taking part.

Jens Madsen, managing director of principal sponsor Ports of Auckland, summed it up in one word – "brilliant".

"The organisation is sensational and it's just brilliant to see so many people out using the waterfront," he says.

"Ports of Auckland is extremely pleased to participate and we cannot get over the level of support from Auckland."

In a first for the sponsors, Mr Madsen addressed the crowd alongside Prime Minister John Key and organiser Fairfax Media's chief executive Allen Williams, then descended the steps and took part in the event, finishing the 8.4-kilometre fun run to St Heliers in 39 minutes and 10 seconds.
