Auckland's best Christmas events
It's a busy time of year, but before you get sick of Christmas completely, check out our festive season highlights.
The Historical Christmas: A Christmas Night at Auckland Museum
Thanks to daylight savings it probably won't be dark, but this is a chance to take a peek around Auckland Museum after hours. Try and turn the evening's host Ebenezer Scrooge into the spirit of Christmas, say hi to Santa in his grotto, listen to live Christmas carols and make Christmas decorations inspired by the 21st Battalion.
There might even be some mulled wine for Mum and Dad.
A Christmas Night at Auckland Museum, from 6-8pm on November 20 & 21. Pre-purchased tickets $20 ($25 on the door).
The Bright Christmas: GLOW - Carols by Glowstick
Every year, this event is a total sell-out, so get in quick. St Paul's Church and Vector Arena host the biggest Christmas carol service - accompanied by 10,000 glowsticks. Hosted by Petra Bagust and with performances from special guests including Zed's Nathan King, this is a sing-a-long that shouldn't be missed. Bring along an item of non-perishable food for the Auckland City Mission.
GLOW: Carols by Glowstick at Vector Arena from 6pm on November 16. Tickets $5.
The Funny Christmas: Megachristmas
Santa has gone missing in this Christmas panto, and it's up to Kimberly Crossman, Jacinda Arden and Shane Cortese to find him. Oh and did we mention Santa just so happens to look a lot like everyone's favourite internet tycoon, Kim Dotcom? Come along - just don't bring the kids.
Megachristmas at Basement Theatre from November 12 - 22. Tickets $30.
The Traditional Christmas: Franklin Rd Light Trail
It's great every year (just look at the crowds), and 2012 is no different. Make the trip down Franklin Rd in Ponsonby, before popping over to the area's latest attraction - the Telecom Christmas Tree at Victoria Park. With more than 375,000 lights, you can't really miss it.
Franklin Rd Light Trail on Franklin Rd and Victoria Park until December 26. Entry is free.
The Commercial Christmas: Britomart Christmas Market Day
Auckland CBD is full of markets making the most of the seasonal spend - and they have some fantastic present ideas.
This weekend, Aotea Square will be jam packed with local designers, artists, vintage sellers and food outlets for the Unwrapping Christmas Markets.
Then on Saturday, Britomart's Takutai Square will be full of festive fun with Christmas cookies, cakes and Santa himself popping up alongside the regular City Farmer Market and the monthly Art & Design Market.
Unwrapping Christmas Markets at Aotea Square on December 14 - 16. Britomart Market at Tukatai Square on December 15.Entry is free to both markets.
The Performance Christmas: Unwrapping Christmas
Salsa dancing and body art aren't at the top of the "reminds me of Christmas" list, but this year, they just might be. From Friday night music and dance, to theatre performances and digital art, this Christmas festival is the perfect place to get into the mood.
Unwrapping Christmas at Aotea Square, every Friday from December 7 - 21. Entry is free.
