Police have arrested and charged a man with assault after a stabbing on Auckland's North Shore on Thursday night that left the victim in a coma.
A 25-year-old man suffered life-threatening stab wounds to his right thigh after he was stabbed with a large knife outside a house in Palmerston Rd, Birkenhead around 7pm.
Police this afternoon arrested a 36-year-old unemployed man and charged him with common assault. Further charges may follow.
The injured man remained in an induced coma iin Auckland City Hospital after undergoing surgery last night.
The stabbing happened during a fight between the two men, police said.
The police Eagle helicopter and a team of police staff were last night hunting the attacker, and a police spokesman said this morning North Shore detectives were following "strong leads".
Forensic teams are at the scene of the stabbing today, and police were speaking to neighbours and associates of the attacker.
The spokesman said it would be "some time" before police would be able to talk to the victim.
The man will appear in the North Shore District Court tomorrow.
