FUNNY FACE: Stephen Merchant will play the Town Hall tonight.

Looking for something to do at the weekend or over the days ahead? We check out some of Auckland's best events.

Main Event

Stephen Merchant Live: Hello Ladies - Wednesday

He has won Emmys, BAFTAs and Golden Globes, and is one of the brains behind The Office and Extras. Stephen Merchant - Ricky Gervais' lanky offsider - is here for his first ever stand-up comedy tour this week, and by all accounts it's a show not to be missed. Especially if you're looking for a 6ft 7 husband - this is the Hello Ladies tour, after all.

Stephen Merchant Live at Auckland Town Hall, December 19. Tickets from Ticketmaster.

Free Stuff

Christmas Movie Under the Stars - Thursday

Bring a blanket and some cash - there will be a carnival with Taste of Christmas market stalls - and enjoy one of the finest Christmas movies around, Love Actually.  It's first in, first served for a spot on the grass, so get there before the sun sets.

Christmas Movie Under the Stars at Hurstmere Green from 8.45pm, December 20. Entry is free.

Family Fun

A Christmas Night at Auckland Museum - Thursday and Friday

Thanks to daylight savings it probably won't be dark, but this is a chance to take a peek around Auckland Museum after hours. Come and say hi to Santa in his grotto, listen to live Christmas carols and make Christmas decorations inspired by the 21st Battalion. There might even be some mulled wine for mum and dad.

A Christmas Night at Auckland Museum, from 6-8pm on December 20 & 21. Pre-purchased tickets $20 ($25 on the door).

Date Night

Nathan Haines - Saturday

This is sure to be an unmissable night of good food, and more importantly, music.  Nathan Haines will perform two sets, to be enjoyed alongside a four-course meal especially designed by head chef Sergio Maglione. Doors open at 7pm, first set at 8.30pm, second set at 10pm.

Nathan Haines at Toto/Montecristo, December 22 from 7pm. Tickets $120 from iTicket.

Staying In/Going Out

Christmas is all about music - usually bad renditions of good songs. Luckily this year everyone's favourite Teddy Ruxpin-lookalike - Michael Buble - is gathering up some mates and doing it properly.

But maybe your Christmas Eve traditions don't involve Canadian crooners. Perhaps your rituals include opening just one present, going to midnight mass, or heading to the pub for a drink. This year Golden Dawn are whipping the egg whites and biffing in a bit of booze for some festive egg nog fun - but only until midnight, because Santa won't visit if you aren't tucked up in bed by witching hour.

Michael Buble: Home for the Holidays on TV3, December 24 at 5pm

Christmas Eve at Golden Dawn, December 24 from 5pm
