Counties Manukau Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a woman in Pakuranga Heights, Auckland on Tuesday evening.

Twenty-two year old Chozyn Koroheke has been named as the victim.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Tiernan said officers were working to establish exactly what has occurred at the property but believe it was a domestic violence incident.

Earlier reports said the woman had received critical injuries, and had died in an ambulance while being treated by paramedics.

Tiernan said police have a person of interest in relation to the investigation, but for "operational reasons" were not able to make any further comment at this stage.

"We want to assure the community that we have a number of staff working on this investigation and are following positive lines of enquiry."

Police and ambulance crews first responded to the incident at a residence on Pakuranga Road, near Gossamer Dr, around 5pm on Tuesday.
