Hundreds of South Auckland residents are being urged to limit their power usage tonight after an explosion at Transpower's Bombay Substation.
Power was out for thousands of properties in the Franklin area, south of Auckland and in Pukekohe from 12.20pm to 2.30pm.
A Transpower circuit-breaker exploded, causing significant equipment damage.
Staff are set to work well into the night to repair the issue, spokeswoman Rebecca Lawson said.
Some 1600 residents in the Mangatawhiri area, Franklin, are urged to conserve power when cooking dinner tonight.
"We're asking them to conserve power throughout the peak period of 5pm to 7pm to ease pressure on the service," Lawson said.
The plant is not back up to capacity and power is having to be fed back through the system.
