Teenager killed by train was jogging and wearing headphones
A 16-year-old boy was out for a jog when he ran into the path of an oncoming train and was killed in west Auckland.
He was believed to be wearing headphones when he crossed the tracks at Ranui station and was unaware of the approaching train.
The boy's family members became concerned after he failed to arrive home from his early-morning run and saw emergency services nearby.
They learned of his tragic death at the scene.
Senior Sergeant Richie Thompson of Waitakere Police said, "this is the scenario that every parent fears the most and we extend our utmost sympathies to the boy's family.
"It was a very emotional scene for all involved."
With family members still learning of the tragedy, the boy's name has not been publicly revealed.
The incident happened just before 7am on Thursday, and forced the closure of the western train line and a road in Ranui.
