Police are attending an incident at an Auckland bank on Thursday evening.

Police are hunting two men who robbed a security van outside an Auckland bank during rush hour on Dominion Rd on Thursday.

The van was held up outside an ASB Bank on Dominion Road in the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill.

The van was hit at 4.45pm on Thursday, with the two offenders fleeing on foot with a quantity of cash, a police spokeswoman said. 

Initially police were unsure if they were armed, but after extensive witness interviews through the evening, they later confirmed the two were both armed.

No shots were fired, but police said: "A number of people were shaken however and are receiving ongoing support."

Police have only said a "sum of cash" was taken - they routinely never reveal how much is stolen in a bank or security van robbery.

In a statement issued police said: "Police do not believe this was a random robbery."

The said the men "are still outstanding and a full investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible.

An employee at the nearby Bradburns Value Pharmacy said police cars were at the scene for some time and the intersection of Mt Albert Road and Dominion Road had been cordoned off for much of the evening.
