Auckland punch victim dies
A man has appeared in court over the king hit of a man in central Auckland who today died from his injuries.
Naval rating Grenville David McFarland, 27, appeared at the Auckland District Court this afternoon charged with assaulting Tarun Asthana, 25.
Police have said that, due to Asthana's death, McFarland will face a more serious charge at a later date.
McFarland was remanded on bail, under strict conditions, to reappear in court on November 15.
Asthana suffered head injuries after being punched and then striking his head on the pavement near the intersection of Queen and Customs streets about 5.10am on Saturday.
He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital, where he was placed on life support. The court was informed by hospital staff that he has died.
Asthana was studying to be a primary school teacher.
Police inquiries were continuing and officers were seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the assault.
