Lucky escape after car smashes into Subway restaurant in East Tamaki, Auckland

A red Volkswagen crashed through the doors of the East Tamaki Subway restaurant on Monday night.

One person has an injured foot after a car smashed through a Subway restaurant in the Auckland suburb of East Tamaki.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Springs Rd just after 8pm on Monday.

A red Volkswagen hatchback smashed through the glass doors of the restaurant, crashed into tables and chairs and stopped just before the counter.

Luckily, no one was in the restaurant at the time.

Subway worker Kunal Bihal was closing up shop for the night when the incident occurred.

No one was inside at the time.

Bihal said two men were working on the car with jumper cables before it launched into the restaurant.
