Grass fire gatecrashes cricket
The cricket is smoking hot, but not on the field.
An impressive smoke cloud emerged from the distance of Eden Park as the Black Caps played India in Auckland today.
A small fire in grass in Mt Eden was to blame for the cloudy distraction.
Northern Fire communications shift manager Paul Radden said emergency services were called to the fire at Mt Eden Domain at 2pm.
The fire, measuring about 50 square metres, started near the Scout Hall on the corner of Clive and Normandy roads.
It may have been a small fire, but the blaze produced enough smoke to be spotted when the cricket game aired on television.
Vegetation fires, like the one at Mt Eden Domain, can produce a lot of smoke, Radden said.
It is not known what caused the fire.
