Accused street attacker arrested again
A South Auckland man who failed to appear in court over an alleged frenzied street attack on a woman he'd never met has been arrested.
Lual Makur Lual, 26, was arrested this morning on a warrant for failing to appear in the Manukau District Court yesterday. He was facing charges of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The alleged assault left Praveet Chahal bleeding on the ground in Papatoetoe while bystanders ignored her cries for help.
The 40-year-old woman was out walking near her home about 5.30pm on January 16 when she said she was attacked by a bottle-wielding stranger.
The next day, police arrested Lual in relation to the attack on Chahal and another victim. He was released on bail.
Chahal's nose was broken, an eye socket was fractured and she had extensive bruising. She spent a night in hospital after the incident, which she said bystanders did nothing to prevent.
Lual will reappear in court on Monday.
