Part of Northcote Rd is cordoned off following a gas leak outside BP petrol station.
A member of the public called emergency services at 10.50am.
Senior station officer John Roberts says a digger struck a gas main and the area has been cordoned off as a precaution.
"You can hear the gas and although you can smell it unless you were actually down the hole with a match it's not flammable."
Roberts says as soon as the driver of the digger hit the gas main he jumped off and ran.
The cordon will remain while the Fire Service waits for the gas company to arrive, he says.
