Auckland motorway work to disrupt travel

Late-night Auckland motorists can expect delays with a major section on the Northwestern Motorway closed this week.

The eastbound lane between St Lukes and the Central Motorway Junction will be closed between 9pm and 5am for three nights, starting tomorrow.

The NZ Transport Agency is closing the lane as part of a major upgrade to widen the motorway from three to four lanes in each direction and improve motorway ramps.

Eastbound traffic into the central city and port will be diverted off the motorway at the St Lukes exit.

Diversions will take motorists along Great North and New North roads.

NZTA acting highway manager Steve Mutton said freight and shift workers would be most affected.

"We suggest planning ahead, and allowing more time for travel," he said.

Westbound drivers and users of the northwestern cycleway would not be affected by the closures.

The upgrade is one of six projects being undertaken to connect the Northwestern and Southwestern motorways through the Waterview tunnels.

The new western ring route is one of the Government's Roads of National Significance.
