Six students from Kelston Boys High School are feeling on top of the world after achieving over 90 percent in their Cambridge maths exams.

Year 11 pupils Luke Prinz, Mick Van Leeuwen, David Wong, Andy Kapteyn, Nicholas Allan and Joel Gibson each scored an A-Star mark in the Cambridge International exam system run by the prestigious British university.

Kelston is the first school in the west to offer the exams, with last year’s tests being the first trial of the new system.

"It’s been a great success. A score of A-Star is outstanding and we got six, which is good for the school," assistant principal Terry Harrison says.

The boys each plan to go on to further study at university.

The Cambridge exams are seen as a rival system to the NCEA but can only be offered alongside the national certificates in New Zealand.

About 10,000 New Zealand students sat at least one Cambridge exam last year. There has been a 12 percent increase in the number of students taking Cambridge exams each year.
