MOVE IT, PLEASE: Elimar Drive residents are pleading for Manukau City Council and 2degrees mobile to move this cell site from their neighbourhood.

Would Pakuranga councillors like a cellsite outside their house?

The answer is no.

Dick Quax says he would not be concerned about health issues.

"I’m satisfied in my own mind that there are no health issues involved.

"I guess it all depends how far away it is. If it was right outside my property I probably wouldn’t be happy. If it was 50 metres away it wouldn’t bother me."

David Collings says: "I’d be furious. Absolutely furious.

"It’s one of the reasons I’m against these because I wouldn’t want one outside my house.

"As far as I’m concerned if I wouldn’t want one outside my house I can’t support them being outside anyone’s house – otherwise I’m a bloody hypocrite."

Elimar Drive residents didn’t have a say when a 14.3-metre mast and two 1.8 by 2.4-metre cabinets appeared in their street.

They want telecommunications company 2degrees to move them to the nearby Farm Cove shops clocktower alongside Vodafone and Telecom equipment.

Resident Nigel Edwards says the whole process of installing the site in March "stinks".

"As I’ve publicly said, I smell a rat. How on earth can someone put up a tower in Elimar Drive, when the documents show Glenmore Rd, then they give you a document late at night and start work the next morning.

"I’ve never seen a resource consent granted and work start within 48 hours in the working week. It just stinks."

Consent was granted under delegated authority on Thursday, March 5, without approval from affected property owners.

Mr Edwards was notified of the work on Sunday, March 8, and work started the following morning.

He says Manukau City Council manager resource consents and compliance Brett O’Shaughnessy signed off the consent knowing the clocktower was an option.

"The mayor came and sat in my living room. He said it was horrible, ugly and the noise is terrible."

In an email to Mr Edwards on July 7, 2degrees site acquisition manager Jason Britten says they’ve reviewed the area and could get similar coverage by extending the Telecom clock tower and going above them.

Alternatively "there is a possibility that a site could work in the green area at the end of Caithness Place".

Mr Britten also says they confirmed the total cost of relocation to Manukau City Council at the council’s request.

But 2degrees spokeswoman Bryony Hilless said last week they won’t be moving it.

Ad Feedback

"Essentially it’s there. I can understand that perhaps residents aren’t happy but we went through all the proper processes, worked with council and this is where it was decided to go."

Mr Edwards says he was told by 2degrees that it would cost $150,000 to move because they can’t use the parts anywhere else.

"But I’m sure they can use it somewhere. And I’m sure residents would help move it."

Luke, You should check out articles on the increase in sickness and death of residents of Ouruhia Christchurch when additional Radio towers and FM Transmitters were introduced into their community. Much of the incidences of sickness and death reduced when the additional Radio towers were removed years later.

I supect the Radio towers in Titahi Bay Hills transmit overhead the residents. However I do not know of any studies that confirm that they are 100% unaffected.

Get over it it's only 2kw. Titahi bay residents have National Radio blurting out at 100kw. The world is full of moaners

I had a Cell Phone Tower installed opposite my home last month under non-notified resource consent and have now developed Tinnitus which is a ringing in the ears. The ringing is particularly loud in my lounge (which has high radiation readings) but subsides in other parts of my house. I have made an appointment with an Audiologist to determine the extent of damage and how to address it. Health effects are very real and needs to be taken seriously by all in Council as I would not wish this upon anyone!!!!

I have an Information Technology background which spans 17 years, an Information Engineering Degree which has IPENZ recognition, have installed low frequency base stations in the past and understand the technologies in use. I am one of the biggest fans of technology but have always been wary of RF exposure from my cell phone, base stations, AM/FM transmitters. When I completed my degree at University it was unofficially accepted that long term exposure to various levels of RF may cause cancer. The practice is to adopt a precautionary approach in which exposure can be minimised by a suitable distance thus enabling society to benefit from the technology. Putting Antenna in front of homes and schools exposes people to the maximum ground level radiation output at the TWO peaks which occur. This is seriously creating a health hazard for our communities and it is quite surreal to see it happening.

Since the tower was installed I have made measurements of the power output, distances achieved, spoke to other affected residents, researched the regulations, the Health concerns, NZ standards, International standards, the industry strategies and the politics around this. I made a request to present this to Council, after consideration this was denied by Council as it was deemed repetitious. How could my study be repetitious when they had not even received it.

Tomorrow I understand an independent RF expert Dr David Black will be addressing council to advise on the Health Concerns. I also understand that he has worked for various Telecommunication providers in an advisory capacity. It is unfair that Dr David Black is allowed to address Council and me as an affected resident cannot be heard. Council also know that I am an elected Community Board Member and have the greater good of the community in mind. People need to come to Council en masse and show their disapproval as you may be next to have one installed outside your house or your children’s school.
