Pet lovers counted their blessings alongside their animal companions last weekend.
Grey skies didn’t stop several hundred people and their pets from taking part in a parade up Queen St to the annual Blessing of the Animals at St Matthew-in-the-City on Sunday.
Organised by the Auckland SPCA, the service provided the owners with an opportunity to appreciate all creatures great and small.
The St Matthew’s quartet also sang a choral tribute for the occasion, while renowned animal behaviourist Marc Bekoff, who is visiting from the United States, lit the candle of remembrance to reflect on the lives of animals lost.
SPCA executive director Bob Kerridge says there were no hissy-fits among the congregation that included cats, dogs and birds, as well as a goat, and a black bull.
