Balmoral Macs under attack
Relevant offers
Hundreds of people have voiced their opposition to a 24-hour McDonald's in Balmoral.
The Auckland City Council received about 850 submissions by last Friday's deadline.
A council spokesman says the submissions are being analysed, but only a 'handful' supported the development.
"It obviously shows a lot of community interest," he says.
Once submissions have been analysed, a report will be written and hearing date set.
Balmoral Community Group spokesman Nathan Inkpen says there is a 'huge' push in the community for the hearing to be held at the Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, metres from the site of the proposed restaurant.
Mr Inkpen says his group, which opposes the plan, was pleased with the number of submissions.
"For that many people to make submissions, many of them independently of what we've been doing, is just fantastic."
Mr Inkpen says many people are keen to speak at the hearing, including some elderly and young people who would find it hard to get to a city centre venue.
McDonald's wants to build a drive-through restaurant fronting Wiremu St and Balmoral Rd.
Plans include 63 carparks and a 10-metre sign by the Balmoral Rd entrance.
