The action is on the water at this year’s Onehunga Festival.

Waka ama, or outrigger canoes, will be racing on the lagoon during the annual celebration at
Onehunga Bay Reserve on April 5.

Health promoters Wons are holding a have-a-go day to promote healthy lifestyle and exercise.

"People are so busy these days they forget to have fun and look after themselves," says Wons chief executive Ruth Davy.

"They need to get back to basics of diet, lifestyle and exercise."

The organisation, formerly known as Well Woman, promotes breast and cervical screening.

Ms Davy says they hope to get the message to Maori and Pacific families about the need for regular screening.

"We’re trying to show it’s a family responsibility," she says.

It’s the first time the group has held a waka ama event, but previous sports days have attracted up to 1000 people.

The first 300 to register at the festival – supported by the Central Leader – will receive a goody bag and a lunch voucher.

"People can come with their family or mates, male or female, and have a go on the waka," Ms Davy says.

Maungakiekie Community Board chairwoman Bridget Graham says she’s thrilled with the line-up for this year’s festival.

"It’s really going to be exciting," she says.

Entertainment includes live music, dance and drumming performances.

Kids can cool off on a waterslide.

A skateboarding demonstration will also be held.

The festival is at Onehunga Bay Reserve, Beachcroft Ave, on April 5.

Registration for the waka ama event starts from 9am.
