Jandelle Jack has a passion for fashion that’s turning heads.
The 16-year-old is one of four finalists in a Bernina and Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand costume design competition.
"I want to be a fashion designer, it’s my dream," Jandelle says.
"I love putting clothes together. It’s just amazing."
The St Dominic’s College student was inspired by an aunt who works for world renowned designer and Swanson resident Karen Walker.
"When I was little I’d stay at my aunty’s place and I’d always see her working," she says.
"I thought her sewing machines looked like fun."
The Henderson resident designed a garment based on Egyptian queen Cleopatra and entered it in the Shakespearean themed competition.
The costume is a tight-fitting, short dress of patterned blue silk with a sheer gold robe.
"I chose Cleopatra because she’s sexy and beautiful and the garment is to show her curves," Jandelle says.
"Kiwi girls are beautiful and so is Cleopatra."
Each finalist receives $250, a choice of workshops to attend and their work will be shown in London.
The winner will be announced on Monday and Jandelle can’t wait.
"It’s really exciting," she says.
"I want to create my own business.
"Jandelle says her style is unique.
"I like to design something that’s different, something that stands out," she says.
"I want my design company to target teenage girls who love fashion."
Technology teacher Sue Ingham says Jandelle has got what it takes.
"Her work really stands out," she says.
"It’s got that wow factor."
Ms Ingham says Jandelle’s work is a good example for others.
"She’s a great student and very creative. It’s great for the school because other students can see it’s possible to do."
