A severe weather warning probably wasn't the forecast TVNZ's Tamati Coffey was hoping for, with reports he was to join in a civil union with partner Tim Smith today.

According to a GayNZ article last week, the weatherman's ceremony was set to take place between Christmas and the New Year.

But earlier today former Dancing with the Stars host Jason Gunn tweeted: "Off to a very special wedding today. Can't say much - but I'm sure the 'Coffee' there will be fantastic!"

Today's ceremony, reportedly themed "My Big Fat Gay Wedding", will take place at The Wharf at Northcote Point, close to where the couple live.

When contacted today, a staff member from the waterfront venue would not confirm whether the restaurant had been booked for the occasion.

"We can't comment on anything to do with that sorry," he said.

Late this afternoon performers were seen arriving at the venue.

The Breakfast star and Smith got engaged on Valentine's Day this year.

In a tweet two days later Coffey said: "sorry my followers that you were the last to know! BUT IM ENGAGED! my boy and i will spend this year planning, and we'll do the deed in dec!"

Coffey won DWTS in 2009 and presented the proceeds of his win to Rainbow Youth - an Auckland-based charity supporting young people dealing with issues surrounding their sexual orientation.

Earlier this month Coffey indicated in a tweet he was taking time off Breakfast to prepare for a "gig" at the end of December.
