A masked man with a machete demanded cash and cigarettes at a South Auckland dairy.
A police spokesman said the man held up the Homai superette at 112 Browns Rd in Manurewa at 4.50pm on Sunday.
Threatened with a machete, the staff handed the man four packets of cigarettes and a small amount of cash before the offender fled the shop.
Police say he headed towards Marr Rd, where a member of the public saw him running through a property.
The robber, believed to be in his 20s, is described as Maori or Polynesian, possibly with brown eyes and around 180cm tall with a thin build.
He was wearing a plain black jacket, light blue jeans and dark gloves.
