Police are asking for witnesses after a teenage girl was sexually attacked in South Auckland last night.

The 15-year-old girl was walking home on Coronation Rd in Mangere Bridge when she was grabbed by an unknown man who dragged her into the grass verge and physically and sexually assaulted her.

Police said the girl was able to fight off the attacker and escape.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen or heard anything or recognise the description of the assailant.

The man is described as Polynesian, 20- to 30-years-old, ''with very short hair and of small build''.

Police would particularly like to speak to two women who were in a dark-coloured vehicle driving on Coronation Road which the victim attempted to flag down after the ordeal.

Anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Adam Pyne, of the Counties Manukau Police, on (09) 261 1300 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
