Facebook's top "check-in" locations suggest Auckland is a city obsessed with sport and gambling.

The social media giant has released Auckland's top five social landmarks using data derived from where people check in using their Facebook accounts.

Auckland's most checked-in location was Eden Park followed by SkyCity Casino and Vector Arena.

Perhaps influenced by the Rugby World Cup and people's desire to mark their attendance, the number four spot went to The Cloud and fifth most popular was Viaduct Harbour.

Facebook communications and policy manager Mia Garlick said Facebook allowed people to share updates about their whereabouts with friends and family.

"It's great to see some of Auckland's iconic locations highlighted as some of the most social landmarks."

Facebook also released data on 24 other major cities around the world.

Sports stadia and arenas featured heavily in the round-up as did public squares and parks.

The company said places with warmer climates had more outdoor check-ins - it gave St Kilda Beach in Melbourne and Wynyard Quarter in Auckland as examples.

By contrast, colder places had more check-ins to concert venues or bars.
